Somalia Brief

Somalia is a failed state - a country that has stopped functioning.  1.  The country of Somalia has seen a lot of events and changes over the past four decades.  2.  At first it was a client state of the Soviet Union, then an ally of the United States.  It has, since 1991, been subjected to civil war, invasion by Ethiopia, and internal conflict.  A number of humanitarian events (drought, starvation) have taken place as well as the resurgence of piracy.  Somalia is now considered a haven and training location for radical Islamic terrorist groups.
