In Memory of MSG Emigdio E. Elizarraras

Master Sergeant Emigdio E. Elizarraras, 37, of Pico Rivera, California, died in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan on February 28, 2006, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Ground Mobility Vehicle during a reconnaissance mission.  Elizarraras was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  He had served 19 years in the Army.


Elizarraras was a 1986 graduate of the El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, California.  He played varsity baseball in high school.

MSG Elizarraras joined the Army in 1986.  He attended Basic Combat Training and Infantry Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia.  He participated in Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the first Gulf War with 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment.  His other previous assignments included postings to Fort Benning, Georgia with the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, and in Hawaii with the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment at Schofield Barracks.  He entered Special Forces training in 1997.  He completed his Special Forces training in 1998 and was assigned to 7th Special Forces Group in September of 1998.

Elizarraras’ military education also includes the Ranger Course, Special Operations Target Interdiction Course, Advanced Special Operations Techniques Course, Individual Terrorism Awareness Course, Basic Military Mountaineer Winter Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Course, Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course, Basic and Advanced Airborne Courses, Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic and Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Courses and Air Assault Course.

His awards and decorations include four Army Commendation Medals, three Joint Service Achievement Medals, six Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Basic Marksmanship Qualification Badge, Ranger Tab and Special Forces Tab.

He will be buried at the Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary in Whittier, California.

He leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a son.
