In Memory of SSG Gary Harper

Staff Sergeant Gary R. Harper Jr., 29, of Virden, Illinois, died in Baghdad, Iraq on October 9, 2005 when his reconnaissance mission was attacked by enemy forces.  Harper was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Ky.


Harper was born in Rockford, Illinois where he attended elementary school before moving to Virden, Illinois.  While a boy he was in the Boy Scouts.  He played football and ran track while at Virden High School.

Harper joined the Army in 1993 while still a junior in High School.  He began his career as an artilleryman and his first assignment was with 1st Battalion, 14th Field Artillery in Korea.  He later volunteered for Special Forces training.  He had deployed to Iraq in June 2005.

He leaves behind a wife and three children.
