In Memory of SFC Severin West Summers III
First Class Severin Summers, age 43, of Louisiana was killed on
August 2, 2009 during a combat patrol near Qole Gerdsar,
Afghanistan. He was a Special Forces Engineer
Sergeant assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 20th
Special Forces Group based in Mississippi. 2nd Bn, 20th
SFG(A) was mobilized in May 2009 for Operation Enduring Freedom.
SFC Summers was born in Lafayette, Louisiana. He graduated from Christian Life Academy in 1984. He received his Bachelors of Science from Louisiana State University. He was a true outdoorsman and loved to hunt.
He enlisted in the Army in 1989 as an 11B, Infantryman. He later attended the Special Forces Qualification Course, graduating in 2002 and was assigned to 2nd Bn 20th SFGA.
He attended numerous military schools to include the Airborne Course, SERE, Special Forces Qualification Course, Military Free Fall Parachutist Course, Ranger School, Special Operations Combat Dive Course, and Long range Surveillance Leaders Course.
His awards and decorations include Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Medal, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Scuba Diver Badge, Military Free Fall Badge, and Ranger and Special Forces tabs.
This was SFC Summers second tour in Afghanistan. At the time of his death he was one of three brothers serving in a war zone. One brother in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan.
SFC Summers is survived by his wife Tammy and his daughters Jessica, Shelby, and Sarah. He had just recently married his wife in January 2009.
