In Memory of Captain John Tinsley
|Captain John Tinsley, age
28, of Jacksonville, Florida was killed on
August 12, 2009 during a mounted combat patrol in Oruzgan Province,
Afghanistan. He was a Special Forces Officer
(18A) assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 7th
Special Forces Group based in North Carolina.
CPT Tinsley was a native of New Jersey. He graduated from Vanderbilt Catholic High School in Houma, La. in 1998. He graduated from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida in 2002 with a degree in criminology. While in the ROTC program he was a member of Company A, 124th Infantry in Tallahassee, Florida. He had an interest in martial arts when in college.
Once commissioned he was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. His next assignment was to 3rd Infantry Regiment at Fort Myer, Virginian as a member of the "Old Guard". He later entered Special Forces training and graduated from the SF qualification course in March 2009.This was CPT Tinsley's second deployment in support of the War on Terror having previously done a tour in Iraq.
Tinsley’s military education includes the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle Commander’s Course, Infantry Officer Basic Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Course (SERE), Basic Airborne Course, Ranger Course, and Special Forces Qualification Course.
His awards and decorations include two Bronze Star Medals, Purple Heart Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Medal, NATO Medal Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab and the Special Forces Tab.
Tinsley is survived by his wife and daughter of Fayetteville, North Carolina and his parents of Jacksonville, Florida. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
